Design and Technology
Our vision for D&T at Bournville Village Primary School
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject, which is accessible to all. Using creativity and imagination, our pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We strive to ensure that D&T gives children the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing, and feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design.
We work closely with the Design & Technology Association, adapting the 'Projects on a Page' scheme of work to ensure that many of our D&T projects are linked to other curriculum areas at our school.
In the 2024-25 academic year, we are also hoping to invite parents into school to share their expertise and help with some of our projects. Please contact the D&T lead, Bec Gould, if this is something that you are interested in.
The National Curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
- understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
Rationale: It is our aim at BVPS for pupils to work towards the National Curriculum aims above to the highest possible standard. Pupils will develop subject knowledge and skills across a range of units from Years 1 – 6, which focus on the following areas:
- Food
- Structures
- Textiles
- Mechanisms and mechanical systems
- Electrical systems
3 units of D&T are delivered each year in Years 1 – 6. Our D&T Overview sets out the units to be studied, each unit’s place within pupils’ learning journey and the intended outcome for each unit. The overview also makes reference to cross-curricular links and relevant books kept in school and provides an equipment list for each unit.
Delivery of D&T will involve time spent on the following:
- Investigative and Evaluative Activities to explore ideas and gain insight
- Focused Tasks to develop specific skills or to solve particular problems
- Design, Make and Evaluate Assignments to apply skills to a finished product with a relevant user in mind
