Art and Design
Art and design embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. At Bournville Village, we want our children to be a part of a high quality art curriculum, where they have the opportunity to be engaged, spontaneous and imaginative. Our curriculum exposes children to a variety of artists, designers and architects from different cultures and backgrounds, allowing them to see art across the world. We also encourage our children to ‘have a go’ and be brave with their ideas. It is important that our children can express their ideas verbally, ask questions and broaden their understanding of key vocabulary.
Across Key Stage 1 and Ket Stage 2, we use the Access Art scheme. This is spilt half termly along side design and technology. Access Art allows our children to develop new skills, as well as building on the skills and knowledge they have already gained. Throughout the curriculum, they are also given the opportunity to revisit and practise these skills again.
Art in the Early Years
Children start their art curriculum in the Early Years Foundation Stage through Expressive Art and Design. They learn how to mark make and express what these marks mean. From this they build up to drawing lines and circles using a variety of tools, including paint, pencils, crayons and pens. They are introduced to the primary colours and they explore how these can be used to make new colours. Our children also work collaboratively to create large pieces of art work both indoors and outdoors, as well as expressing their likes and dislikes.
Art and SEND
At Bournville Village Primary we have high expectations for our SEND children and we aim for them to reach the same goals. We want our children to feel supported, motivated and confident to achieve their potential. During our art lessons, staff carefully consider the classroom and environment to ensure that our children can fully access the curriculum.
